Teachers in America have a uniquely tough job. But it doesn't have to be that way.

I think the video also could have mentioned the skyrocketing costs of higher education in the U.S. and the crippling student loan debt it causes. College Board’s "Trends in College Pricing 2017" report examined changes in tuition rates over time, and it found that students at 4 year public schools in the U.S. paid an average of $3,190 (inflation adjusted) in tuition for the 1987-1988 school year. That average rose to $9,970 for the 2017-2018 school year -- a 213% increase. I personally paid over $12,500 in 2013-2014 for tuition alone at a public state university.

As an outsider looking in I am conflicted. Is the US such a wild wild west that they need so much policing of civillians (including kids)? Does every confrontation/argument/insult/offence result in violence? Is all of this "Security" necessary?

These comparisons are mute. You said yourself the variations between states are greater than the variations between nations. It’d be helpful to think of the USA as a continent rather than a country. Finland and NZ a little more than a single city, HongKong and Singapore are literally a single city. Your comparing apples to oranges Vox. Maybe spend more time critically thinking about the issue and less time playing with cardboard cutouts would result in better journalism and a more mature discussion. Nothing will change otherwise.

As a public school high school teacher, students are lazier and standards have been lowered across the state to make data look good. We get "penalized" on our school report card from the state if student's don't finish high school in 4 years. I am judged by how students perform on a test I am not allowed to look out. Discipline has gone out the window! Somehow it is all my fault if a student sits in class and refuses to do an assignment. Please understand this is not ALL students.

Just for my experiences in Korea, the students usually study a lot more after the school hours so that’s why usually the test scores are higher... not a great example to use for the better education quality...

I’m a high school student, and our final project in English last semester was a partner debate. Our resolved statement was “homework is beneficial to students”, and we argued (and won) in favor of that statement. Because not only do Finland, Japan, South Korea etc. have lower teaching hours and more grading/planning hours, but they also have significantly lower homework hours. Finnish high school students spend something like 2.8 hours on homework per WEEK on average, while US students spend around 6 hours per week. Guess who has the higher test scores. TL:DR US teachers have way more homework to grade and also less time to do it; and it doesn’t even pay off in student test scores whatsoever

As an American middle school teacher myself, I would love to see the difference in student behavior in different countries. What I see in my classroom is a lack of respect towards adults and towards each other. Teaching respectful behavior is not a teacher's job, it's the job of the parents. So my question is, is that also true in other countries, and what is it about American families that is making it so difficult for parents to teach their children appropriate behavior. Okay Vox, go find the answer 😉.
